Do you need a CS degree to be a programmer?

The answer is No. I have an engineering degree in Land Surveying and Geomatics, but I work as freelance CAD and GIS programmer. I code plugins for AutoCAD and ArcGIS in C#/C++. I'm not an expert by any chance, but I get the job done.

I wanted to study CS back in the day, but my family was poor (Still poor but I'm working on that) and programming was not a lucrative endeavor here in Morocco. My uncle suggested Land Surveying, so Land Surveying it was. I failed two years out of three, because there was too much Law stuff to memorize as you have to deal with real estate properties and I could not do it. I'm a mathematics and physics guy. I don't memorize things, I solve problems, so I ended up living in psychological hell for five years.

But that did not make me forget about computers. Actually, computers were my only sanctuary. I used to stay up all night(still do, I'm a night owl) coding, reading stuff about processors, memory, objects, new technologies ... in short, everything related to computers. I missed a lot of classes, witch contributed to my failing those two years. I used my skills to fix computers for my fellow students for like 5 bucks a PC. that was easy pocket money. And then I took programming project for their final major projects. I learned a lot from that, the money was a bonus. Nothing beats the feeling of getting paid for doing something you're passionate about.

What I think is, It all comes down to passion. If you are passionate about programming, go for it, study for yourself, there are a lot of resources out there, and then when you feel confident about your skills, go get some certifications if you need some credentials. Good luck.翻译一下
